The Cape Senior League Baseball All-Stars trailed 3-1 July 27 when they entered their last at bats against a Naamans team that had sent them downtown to the losers' bracket in the first place. A weather app wasn’t needed to realize the forecast was bleak. But six runs and a 7-3 win set up a winner-take-all showdown July 28 at the same Camden field where Cape lost a state title to Dover three years ago on a two-out dinger in the seventh off the bat of Nick Spadafino. The karma was creepy.
The Vikings scored 11 in the top of the first and three more in the second inning on a three-run bomb off the bat of Ben Lewis to lead 14-0 after two innings and go on to win 15-3 in a five-inning game. That made 20 unanswered runs in three innings over two games, prompting manager Richard Carey to say, “That’s just Little League baseball," or just crazy if you’re a sports psychologist.
The Delaware state title was the first for a Cape Senior League team, which travels to the Eastern Regional Tournament at Union Field in West Deptford, N.J. The regionals are July 31-Aug. 6. Lose two and hit “reverse directions” on the TomTom, but win and it's World Series time.
Cape, now listed as Delaware, plays Friday, Aug. 1, against the winner of Rhode Island and host NJ-15. If the boys are fortunate and good enough to win, they will pick up the winner of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Other states in the tournament are Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.
Will Jarrell was in complete control pitching the championship game and left two batters shy of a complete game to keep his pitch count down so he could start the regional opener. Anthony Hitchcock came in to shut it down and be the beacon for the charge-the-mound frenzy. All that was missing was Wally Townsend and Mickey the Bulldog chasing the banner around the outfield.
The 11-run first inning got started with a Noah Piper walk, a Kyle Lux single and an RBI single by Richard Carey. Drew Mulcahy and Jarrell walked, and it was 2-0 Cape.
Ryan Meade sent a shot to third for a force at third by a throwaway to first, chased two runs home and it was 4-0. Noah Clifton ripped an RBI double making it 5-0. Noah Piper batted the second time, hit a sac fly to left to make it 6-0. Kyle Lux stroked a two-run double, making it 8-0. Drew Mulcahy doubled home a pair and later scored on a passed ball, closing out an 11-run first inning.
"This is a good group of players; we have about eight kids who can pitch, so we’re set as good as anyone to play tournament ball. And you saw tonight everybody can hit the baseball," said manager Carey.
A team that was down two runs with three outs to go for elimination and came back to score 20 unanswered runs will live a long time along tailgate row.

The Milton All-Stars battled back from the bottom losers' bracket to win games against the District 2 winners, Canal, and won the first rematch against a very good District 1 MOT team. They play MOT Monday, July 28, for the winner-take-all state championship banner.
Milton could only muster four hits in the July 25 loss to MOT. Brian Sponaugle slammed a triple and knocked in the lone run for the visiting Milton squad. Ty Husbands delivered two singles while Timmy Hitchcock hit one.
Ty Husbands struck out four in the loss.
"It was one of those games," said manager Zac Crouch.
Milton knocked District 2 Canal out of contention with a 12-3 win July 26.
Hunter Rauch went 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs, Ty Husbands went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Brian Sponaugle slammed a triple and scored two RBIs, Cole Carter knocked in one run via a double and Nick Cox added an RBI single. Luke Crouch and Timmy Hitchcock went 2-for-3 and 1-for-2, respectively.
Timmy Hitchcock and Nick Cox teamed for five strikeouts and the win in six innings.
In the first championship game matchup with MOT, Milton scored one in the first inning and followed with two in the third and fourth, never looking back, and finished the game off in the sixth with a double play.
"It's really exciting," said Crouch. "To bounce back against Canal and get into the championship round with MOT showed the hearts of our players."
Brian Sponaugle slammed a triple and double, scoring two runners, while Ty Husbands knocked in a run on a double. Nick Cox hit a double and had an RBI; Malikye Wells hit two singles, driving in a Milton runner, and Timmy Hitchcock drove in one. Cole Carter picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
Ty Husbands pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings for the win, putting nine batters in the book via the K. Nick Cox picked up the save.
"It's rewarding to see the team come to play and fight to get to the finish line," said Crouch.

After dropping a 3-2 decision to Nanticoke July 12, the Cape Senior League All-Stars battled back out of the losers' bracket to defeat Nanticoke not once but twice to capture the District 3 championship.
The Cape squad downed Nanticoke 8-4 Friday, July 18 and repeated their victory with a romp with the district banner after a 6-3 win Saturday, July 19.
Friday found the bats coming alive as Noah Piper went 2-for-4, Rich Carey went 2-for-4 with a double and Noah Clifton went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Ben Lewis went 2-for-4 with a home run.
Kyle Lux made three incredible catches in the field, once robbing a Nanticoke batter of a home run over the fence.
Will Jarrell pitched six strong innings and had six Ks. Drew Mulcahy came in for the seventh inning and got the save.
In the final game, Drew Mulcahy delivered the first home run of his baseball career, driving in three runs in the first inning to post a 4-0 lead. That would be all they needed as the Nanticoke team could only muster three runs with a homer in the top of the second.
Other hits in the final game were singles from Noah Piper and Richard Carey.
Pitchers Ben Lewis, Noah Clifton and Drew Mulcahy teamed for four strikeouts and the victory.
Nanticoke pitchers struck out nine Cape batters but walked nine in the contest.
Cape's team batting average was .270 in the tournament, going 31-115 from the plate.
"We really emphasize team effort," said manager Rich Carey. "Our defense was sound and we had good pitching. We were also disciplined at the plate. It was a great team win."
Cape starts its state championship run Thursday, July 24, as they play Naamans at Camden Wyoming.
