Cape Senior League All-Stars win District 3 championship

After dropping a 3-2 decision to Nanticoke July 12, the Cape Senior League All-Stars battled back out of the losers' bracket to defeat Nanticoke not once but twice to capture the District 3 championship.
The Cape squad downed Nanticoke 8-4 Friday, July 18 and repeated their victory with a romp with the district banner after a 6-3 win Saturday, July 19.
Friday found the bats coming alive as Noah Piper went 2-for-4, Rich Carey went 2-for-4 with a double and Noah Clifton went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Ben Lewis went 2-for-4 with a home run.
Kyle Lux made three incredible catches in the field, once robbing a Nanticoke batter of a home run over the fence.
Will Jarrell pitched six strong innings and had six Ks. Drew Mulcahy came in for the seventh inning and got the save.
In the final game, Drew Mulcahy delivered the first home run of his baseball career, driving in three runs in the first inning to post a 4-0 lead. That would be all they needed as the Nanticoke team could only muster three runs with a homer in the top of the second.
Other hits in the final game were singles from Noah Piper and Richard Carey.
Pitchers Ben Lewis, Noah Clifton and Drew Mulcahy teamed for four strikeouts and the victory.
Nanticoke pitchers struck out nine Cape batters but walked nine in the contest.
Cape's team batting average was .270 in the tournament, going 31-115 from the plate.
"We really emphasize team effort," said manager Rich Carey. "Our defense was sound and we had good pitching. We were also disciplined at the plate. It was a great team win."
Cape starts its state championship run Thursday, July 24, as they play Naamans at Camden Wyoming.
